Homeschooling

A few of my fellow stay-at-home mom friends are seriously considering homeschooling their kids. I have to be admit that I really haven’t considered it yet nor will I have the patience to teach. I also think that my kids will benefit more in school socially than if they stay at home. I am not against it, but I know my kids and social interaction is on the things they are really weak in so they nee exposure.

Regarding academics, I actually have no problem because my kids are very bright. My son doesn’t even need help doing his Math homework. He actually even helps his classmates even. Free math homework help is actually available in school but for those who need help even when at home studying, they recommend Tutor Vista. They have Free math tutoring online with the help of tutors.  Free math tutoring  is just one of the subjects they can help your kid with.

Calculus help can also be given with the help of a Calculus tutor. Solve calculus problems with the help of Tutor Vista!

A Great Family Car

A family car is one of our goals this year. I really hope we can make this happen. We are still discussing if we should get a second-hand car or invest on a new one, after all, if we can raise half the money, we can loan the other half. But it would delay our plans of having a downpayment for our house project. However, there have been unsolicited advice coming from well-meaning friends that used cars would eventually get more expensive with maintenance and repairs. We should pray we get lucky with a prized pre-loved car if ever we go that route.

I really would like a SUV, since I need to foresee my family’s need and growth. Plus, we travel lengthily quite often so having a big car where the kids can sleep is a plus. A honda pilot looks perfect!

I was initially into a Ford Escape for the size and shape (and the diesel usage) but once Honda came out with this, I was hooked. I wish we can afford it though. It has reviews of being a great family car without having to force one into being seen in a minivan. It also has another feedback that would make great for family cars – it is one of the safest vehicles in any class, with top crash-test results from both the federal government and the IIHS in frontal and side tests.

Some More Home Tips

  • Find “ME” space. Always set aside a quiet space you can escape to for reading, snoozing, or recharging. (I have yet to claim this!)
  • Create a breakfast nook. This becomes a space where your whole family can bond together for a few moment over food before rushing to office or school.
  • Have a studio, space or room for your hobbies. This is extremely important for us as we are a family of techies. We must have laptops wired to the internet at all times. It must be extremely nice if we can have a room where we can surf the net, download and watch movies while eating popcorn all day.

Starter Home Tips

A starter home involved a husband and a wife, at first and eventually grows into a family. With children, there are a lot of aspects to consider and here are some points:

  • Spaces should be flexible. The rest of the home should be flexible, a start-up family with a lot of disposable income is rare, so it’s hard to build what you like in one go. There should always be provisions for future expansions and improvements.
  • You will need family or entertainment rooms. One way to keep kids at home is provide them with a venue where they can relax and bond with the rest of the family and even bring home to entertain friends. You can have an entertainment room and game room with ping pong tables or billiard tables for recreation.

Going Smarter with Recycling

People are feeling the effects of their carelessness towards Mother Nature nowadays. Climate changes, extreme and abnormal weather conditions, landslides, floods and natural disasters like earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are happening left and right with alarming frequency. Caring for Mother Earth has been pushed to the top priority by a lot of countries and recycling has taken a new form – we have to thank concerned citizens going mainstream to touch base with more people for this. Recycling is now “going green” and being “eco-friendly”. But recycling is segregating recyclable and non-recyclable items. We should do more than separating an empty plastic bottle.

We should also do something about the food and leaves we throw in our trash. Just remember, with the rate people are throwing their trash, landfills will be full to the brim with all the things we have been throwing away. So what do we do with all the leftover food? If you cannot give it to people who can still eat it (provided it’s not spoiled), even the peelings of your food preparation can be taken and made into a compost pile.

Are we going back to basics? I think we should. The food that we eat may seem luscious and big but we do not know how much pesticides or artificial fertilizers it has received. With your own garden composter, you can be sure of the food you are giving to the plants that you will eventually eat. Now, that is recycling to its fullest, don’t you think? We don’t even have to it the hard way as there are now compost bins who do all the hard work for us, we just need to put our garbage there and they  rotate daily and come out with soil-like compost for us to use on our plants.

Maintaining a Worm Farm is also ideal if you are not crazy about the smell composting material would bring. This is how a Worm Factory looks like, you can get one like this in Outdora.com:

You just need to fill the worm composter with worms, fill it in with food leftovers and other organic material and your worms will do your work for you! They keep the compost odor-free in a recycled plastic bin and speeds up making your nutrient-rich fertilizer. You don’t even have to touch it afterwards. Notice there is a faucet or spout at the bottom of your worm farm bin? Just open it and lay it on your land waiting to be fertilized.

Now once you have warmed up to the idea of composting, why not take it one step further and try a composting toilet for your home. Did you know that waste from the toilet is 90% water? Imagine how many liters of water is flushed and wasted down the toilet per household and multiply it by the number of houses all over the world and you have got a huge problem on wasting water. Why not conserve water too?

These composting toilets evaporate water and break down the solid wastes to salts. These salts can also be used to fertilize the ground. Do not worry about maintenance. They are very easy to install and sanitary!

A Call for Tough Savings

I am so happy and proud for my friend who will move into their own house this summer. It came from endless hard work and a lot of belt-tightening on their part and now all of it is coming to a great dream come true: their own house, or their Little Mansion, as they fondly call it. I have seen them, particularly my friend, really save everything. If there is such a thing as pinching pennies, she would really have been doing it! Nothing beats the effectiveness of stress when it comes to losing weight as she really lost a lot of it, even natural weight loss supplements won’t help her lose that much that fast.

I hope we can be like them and finally invest in a house soon. I am still praying where we want to plant our roots. It needs to have a great community for growing kids, definitely. I want my kids social, physical and mental being cultivated in where we would live.

Desks

Since I work from home, I can’t help but be drawn to great desks featured in home decorating blogs. I am quite satisfied with my desk for now – nothing gives me more focus than an organized space just for work, but seeing these beauties makes me long to have a new work space, or a new house.

Being at home in front of the computer all days has some advantages, I am not getting expensive meals nor being inconvenienced by commuting everyday. But it sure is bad for the weight since you tend to snack all day. I might need help from www.naturalfatburner.net!

Sometimes I want a desk that has a lot of “organized clutter” like this one:

But quickly remember I live in a very dusty place.

My inner minimalist likes this one:

But I doubt I can keep this clean. I love it among all the rest I have my eyes on though.

Corkboards are a need for my busy life I think:

I all found them here.

How to Bring Color to Your Home

They say that color directly affects our moods that is why most people are strongly advised to seriously think over which colors they want their homes to be painted with. Once it’s done, it’s going to be hard to repaint everything (time+cost+arranging furniture around the house). If you are as fickle-minded as me, you would be best to stick to white walls (the most popular choice) and just draw out your frustration with colorful accents around the house or else you would need wrinkle face cream as early as now from too much stress!

Here are some color swatches and their meanings. I hope they can help you decide. I got this from the Decorology blog.

Locsin Furniture

Sometimes it is hard to believe that Pinoys can be this talented!

Just look at all his work (more after the jump!) – truly amazing. This is one of the reasons why I am so inspired lately. Looking at nice things is really one of the most effective natural treatments for depression!

If you google him – “Locsin Furniture” – you will see a list of websites of furniture from Europe and overseas. I am not surprised! They use synthetic rattan by the way.

In 1979, Roberto M. Locsin established Locsin International, a Philippine manufacturer and exporter of furniture and lamps, together with his wife, Cindelyn B. Locsin. The formidable partnership led to what is now known as a trusted name in the international furniture market.

You can read more about them here.

Modern Country

I think I finally found what my home style is – modern country! I love minimal and modern furniture but sometimes modern furniture is all about strong lines and angles that it seem cold and uninviting. I want my house to still appear warm and inviting and most of all lived in. I guess you get that from shabby and country style of houses.

I am also getting attracted to wicker furniture – with a modern twist. I have been staying up late browsing home interior sites, saving pictures to my laptop, hoping someday when we can afford to buy a house of our own we can have one custom-made. All the late nights have been catching up to me as I have raccoon eyes, dull skin and what I hope is not the beginning of adult acne!

As you can see I am still in love with everything white.
I want a bay window just like that in our master’s bedroom.

Little knick knacks are everywhere but they aren’t cluttered at all.
