Playing Poker: The “Reading” People Trick

Poker has been getting all the raves right now – poker night among buddies has replaced friday nights at the bar and are usually present during game nights too – playing poker while watching football, baseball or basketball games.

Reading people is often one of the most difficult things to do in online poker. After all, you can’t see them. However, you do have a limited set of tools that you can use.

The first tip is to be generally aware of the wealth level of your fellow players. This applies primarily to table play; tournament play requires a much different style and approach.

After you get a general awareness of their wealth level, you’ll want to pay attention to the timing. If they call instantly, it shows eagerness, while a longer amount of time prior to calling shows that they are contemplating it. Both of these things can be falsified by players who want to give a certain impression, so pay attention to how they play certain hands, and use the “previous hand” feature to get a good concept of a player’s style.

Now, another hit among male friends (and even females) is playing online games – like those that feature a no deposit casino bonus. I personally have not tried it yet but I think that if you know how to control yourself, it can be quite an entertaining and enjoyable experience. Who doesn’t want to play games when there is nothing else to do on a Friday night, right?

Gaming Tips for Online Poker Players

A friend of mine has been regularly playing poker with friends for several years already. Just recently, she mustered up enough courage to try out online poker. She is both pleasantly surprised and overwhelmed at the same time. She has been trying hard to quickly process all the information she has gathered on poker, rake, full tilt rakeback, and many more. She was encouraging me to try playing online poker as well and she had some tips for me.

  • Familiarize yourself. There are numerous online poker websites nowadays. Each one has their own quirks, advantages, and disadvantages. Be familiar with a website before seriously playing. Take note of rules, rake, rakeback, coupons, and other things that you could use to your advantage.
  • Hold off on real money. Always prefer free sign-ups over paid ones. Most poker websites will let you play trial games which you can use to get a feel of the website. Once you are comfortable, then that is when you should whip out your credit card.
  • Take advantage of rakeback. This is an excellent way to increase your earnings or manage your losses. A website or coupon that allows you to rake back is always better.

WSOP Player Spotlight: Chris Moneymaker

With a name like "Chris Moneymaker," you don’t really need a nickname for the poker tables. Surprisingly enough, however, that name is not an adopted moniker. Rather, it is an adaptation of a German name that comes from his ancestors who made gold and silver coins for a living. Moneymaker has successfully made true on his name in another sense, by obtaining over $3 million in tournament winnings since his entry into professional poker.

It is said that Moneymaker made history with his 2003 WSOP Main Event championship victory due to the fact that he was the first player to ever get into the WSOP Main Event through an online satellite. His success spawned an increase in online poker with players aiming for major satellites, which is now referred to as the "Moneymaker Effect."

Unlike many poker players, Chris Moneymaker actually finished his college degree, obtaining a Master’s in accounting. He worked two jobs, one full time and one part time, prior to his victory at the WSOP, which marked his entry into professional poker playing. Since that time he has gone on to other tournament victories, including a total of four money finishes in WSOP events. He also used his reputation in poker to spur other gaming related projects, including a gaming website and his own autobiography, which mostly details his path to the top during the 2003 WSOP Main Event.

He has gone on to prove that it was far more than luck that got him there. He finished second in a World Poker Tour tournament and final tabled in numerous other prominent tournaments. He has also become a Poker Stars spokesman.

Chris Moneymaker currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee with his wife and child. He plays both live games and online poker while pursuing other gaming related projects.
