Tooth Ache

I have this one big problem on an upper tooth of mine. It has been giving me a lot of pain every now and then, and my dentist has recommended a root canal be done and a jacket afterwards. I have no problems with the pain and hassle of going there every few days but my dentist was honest enough to admit that root canals make teeth very brittle as they kill nerves and the blood supply to the tooth. And if I am not careful with it, it might crack (that’s why it is brittle) . In very rare cases, it gets infected again. All that expense for nothing! I might as well have it extracted but I cannot bear to accept that I will have missing teeth. Sure there are dental implants in San Diego available and I can try them but nothing beats the real tooth. Don’t you agree?

More Ways to Lose Weight

Maybe moving houses can count as a way to lose weight, all those packing, lifting, moving and unpacking combined with a lot of stress can really help you lose a lot of poundage. Only I have not been the type who can lose weight when stressed – I pack more pounds. I read about jenny craig reviews and was curious about it too. I need to really cut back on refined sugars and carbs!

In Search Of..

I am in search of diets that work! Really! So far people have been suggesting the South Beach Diet, the After Six diet and the Liquid-Detox Diet. Which one really works? I personally think it should be a combination of both. At my stage, it will be bad for my metabolism to starve my body (not eat anything). It should be about portion control, calorie count and physical activity – I need to start small and up my metabolism from there. Wish me luck!

Diabetes.

Somewhere in the back of my mind, I know sometime soon I will also have diabetes. I am predisposed to the disease as my paternal grandmother and father have it, I’m a high birth weight baby and I am clinically obese now. My dad is a doctor who is still in denial that he has it and would often just tell us what he has is chemical imbalance :) He doesn’t need insulin YET but I hope it won’t progress to needing it. Right now, we are careful with his extremities as he doesn’t need to have it punctured as wounds of diabetic take a long time to heal. He uses diabetic socks too.

Would I want to be like that in ten years? Definitely not. That’s why I should act now.

Diseases

I remember when I was young, the biggest disease of the decade was the Big C – it occurs in many forms like malignant Mesothelioma. That was in the 80’s. The decade of the 90’s was all about the scary HIV/AIDs. And come Y2k, all sorts of diseases that instantly kill came out, most of them are viral in nature – how scary right? Who knows what disease will kill more people next?

Natural Fat Fighters

I thought I’d give you a list of top fat burners the natural way. We all know that there are hundreds of synthetic fat burners in the market and while they may work, nothing beats doing things the natural way.

  • Fruits rich in vitamin C like limes, lemons, oranges, guava, grapefruit and tangerines have fat burning properties so they may be called as FAT BURNING FOODS or FAT BURNERS or FIGHTERS. Vitamin C dilutes the fat and makes it less effective and helps in releasing the fat from the body.
  • Apples: Pectin in apple restricts the cells to absorb the fat; and also encourages water absorption from the food which helps in releasing the fat deposits from the body. The antioxidants in apples may help prevent metabolic syndrome, a condition marked by excess belly fat or an apple body shape.
  • A recent research reports that calcium in dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt act as fat burner that can boost weight loss by increasing fat breakdown in fat cells. Research has shown that eating 3-4 servings of dairy products a day is more effective at enhancing weight loss efforts than calcium supplementation alone. So eat dairy products that act as fat burners.
  • Calcium Rich Dairy Products
The University of Tennessee researchers found:
  • Overweight people who consumed 3 servings a day of calcium-rich dairy lost more belly fat than those who followed a similar diet minus two or more of the dairy servings. The calcium supplements didn’t work as well as milk.
  • Nuts help feel full while also increasing the body’s ability to burn fat.
  • Chilies: Foods containing chillies or cayanne pepper are considered to be as foods that burn fat. Chillies contain capsaicin that helps in increasing the metabolism. Capsaicin is a thermogenic food, so it causes the body to burn extra calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chilies.
  • Proteins: Protein rich foods and high fiber foods are the best as foods burning belly fat. Protein needs more energy to digest than fat as so eat low calorie dairy products, beans, whole grains, oatmeal, eggs, etc. as much as possible.
  • Lentils are high in protein and soluble fiber, two nutrients that stabilize blood sugar levels, therefore lentils are a great tummy flattener.
  • Some of the other foods that may be included in the list of fat burning foods are asparagus, beet root, broccoli, cabbage, carrot, chillies, beans, soybeans, sweet potatoes, blueberries and watermelon.

Detoxifying

After all the pigging out we did during the holidays, I would not be surprised if everyone wants to go on a diet. Somebody even wants to do colon cleansing. Naturally I was curious about and researched on the benefits of colon cleanse. Here is what I found:

  1. reduction of constipation
  2. elimination of diarrhea
  3. avoidance of colon cancer
  4. experience of significant weight loss**
(The average colon weighs up to four pounds. But it is nothing unusual at all for the effective process of colon cleansing to flush away as much as ten to thirty pounds of stagnant fecal matter out of one’s body.)

WOW. Is someone convinced or what? :)

Run. Run. Run.

I have sworn to run this week. I kept my rubbershoes, some socks, track pants and couple of shirts (with change) at my parents’ place so that whenever I come there I can always run at the treadmill! The treadmill is in front of the TV so I can watch. However, I always have Martha in tow with me so it gets a little harder – I need to endure Shrek or Elmo or worse, Barney! Who will get motivated to run after that? Id need MP3 players to keep running.

Blur Blur Blur

I see blurry things lately and hate to admit I might need eyeglasses – me who had perfect vision despite of working in front of the PC for five years and studying endless nights nursing books. It might be high blood pressure or high blood sugar – in which case, Id gladly take the blurry eye vision :)

The problem is, I dont look nice wearing them. I dont have a nice straight nose and my eyes are too small to get recognized in glasses. I think I need the fashion police aka my sister Agnes to help me. LOL.

Any suggestions which glasses are nice to wear for a round face frame like mine?

Weight Talk

I think I gained weight from last week – or it could just be PMS talking as Ive got a huge zit on my chin and have been craving chocolates more often than usual (and for a chocoholic like me, that is crazy! :) ) Im going to be stricter with my health regimen – at least 15 minutes of activity that will make me sweat, more water (like 3L) and some weight loss supplements. A friend has been recommending some cheap Phentermine but Im still too scared to try it out – I have tried Xenical (but the husband got me generic ones which are cheaper) and it works :) .

I want to be healthy – taking care of two kids who are active made me realize I need to be fit to keep up with them.
