The term occupational therapy has been around for many years now. However, ask a normal person whether he or she knows what it is and chances are you would get a blank look. Despite the high demand for occupational therapy jobs, many people are still not aware of what it is that occupational therapists do. Unlike physical therapy jobs and physical therapist assistant jobs which are becoming quite popular, occupational therapy has yet to be put in the limelight.
Occupational therapy is simply the practice of occupation. Here, occupation refers to the normal and regular process of everyday living like eating, bathing, dressing, grooming, writing, driving, meal preparation, and many more. The job of an occupational therapist is to work with a client so that the client can be functional and independent in his or her everyday life. The role of an occupational therapist can be better understood with the usual clients that they have. They often work with people who have permanent disabilities, children, elderly, those who have mental health problems, those with learning disabilities, terminally ill patients, people who have chronic pain, and many more. These people are those who have difficulty performing the usual daily tasks on their own so an occupational therapists help them learn to manage despite their difficulties.
